Example apps: if bad user input, retry instead of raising error & quitting #198

E.g. when user supplies a URL or path that is bad or has un-parseable
data, the apps currently raise error and quit. Instead, in most cases
we should be able to capture the error message compactly and show to user,
and ask user to try again.
