unknown in my case

What did you expect to happen?

I use Puzzle Storm as a tool to train myself to recognize obvious patterns quickly. But when I play Puzzles, I try to find the solution at all costs, even if it takes me several hours over the course of multiple days. So I don't want Puzzle Storm (or reviewing failed problems from Puzzle Storm) to affect my Puzzles rating, and I don't see why anybody would. It's kind of like having bullet games affect one's classical rating.

What happened instead?

As of a week ago, clicking a puzzle failed during Puzzle Storm would open a new browser tab for review, and the user would have to opt out of being rated. They only had to do this once per session afaik, but this is still counterintuitive behavior since I would not expect to be rated at all in the logical vicinity of Puzzle Storm.

Very recently, Lichess began opening the mobile app to review failed puzzles instead of a new browser tab. This is a worse UX for at least two reasons:

  1. In order to return to the browser tab with the "failed puzzles" dashboard, I must now swipe "back" on my phone twice rather than once
  2. The mobile app does not indicate whether you are being rated

I (~2700) got a ~1400 puzzle wrong because I didn't know I was being rated (boo-hoo). I don't know how this happened, since I opted out of being rated and it seemed like reviewed puzzles weren't showing up on my profile. I chalk it up to counterintuitive, if not necessarily unintended, app behavior, or perhaps a session refresh and/or behavior change within the last day or so.

My recommendation:

  • revert the behavior that opens the mobile app to review failed Puzzle Storm puzzles
  • universally disable ratings on Puzzle Storm problems, including problems accessed for review via Puzzle Storm (or if a compromise is necessary, at least disable ratings by default)
  • (down the road) add full mobile support for Puzzle Storm
