Part of #170 and follow up to #184.

As part of the migration we could also do some tidying and organizing e.g. some or all of

  • Get a clear list of projects/programs and refactor existing content around that
  • Identify any high-level themes
  • Move older material to a clear archival section with redirect

Questions

  • What is the layout (information architecture) of the digital garden (and life itself site in general)?
  • How do we have subsections of site (given its size) e.g. notebook section vs tao section vs ...
  • What are our categories?

Acceptance

  • New structure and taxonomy agreed
    • Categories for blog posts are refined e.g. to 2 high level categories: programs/projects OR themes/topics
    • Implemented into blog
    • Implemented into site
  • What do we do with the existing institute content

Tasks

Prep

  • Create Job stories for website structure 🚧 job stories compiling in here
  • Analyse the taxonomy of categories and refine
  • Analyse blog posts to see if there are any to remove

Implementation

Notes

What taxonomy structure do we use?

Currently we have 42 categories, for the average blog is it suggested to have approximately 10.

QUESTION: Should we use categories more sparingly and have tags too?

  • For example, each initiative would have it's own tag, plus a tag for past, present, future
  • The overall category would be Initiatives
  • Other Categories could include: Updates, Summaries of concepts and traditions, Guides to practices, Book Reviews Our Philosophy (Or Key Readings), Activities (if we continue to use blog posts as landing pages for events etc, which I would say not to and then any announcements or launches would be categorized as updates)

root --> topic
root --> program

Programs

  • Hubs
  • Residencies (DDP?)
  • Research / Think tank / Institute / Labs

Naming - an eternally hard topic!

Principles:

  • KISS
  • Have less categories with more content than being super specific
    • Categories tags do not work like hashtags
    • Full category pages are more user-friendly than pages with just one or two articles
    • YES longtail SEO is important, but this should be from page title and not categories per se

What name do we use for the root taxonomy items

  • topic: theme, category, ...
  • program: project, area (activity area), initiative
    • These categories should then link directly to the initiative page (AKA the intiative landing page is also the category archive)
# landing pages
/ # home
/newsletter
/programs # e.g. residencies etc

# optional
/podcast

# hubs?? or is this in tao now?
/hubs ??

# resources
/about
/initiatives/ - a full list of all our activities

Clarification: Initiatives can be a series of activities. Therefore, Embodying Collective Transformation is an initiative with each residency being an activity (and listed on the events page).

Categories

  • Broad categories: Technology, Spirituality, Ecology, Climate, Economy, Farming, Community (Max 9) or the ones on the ecosystem map already
Categories lead to mega guides which compile different areas within each area. E.g. Farming => Permaculture, Agroforestry, Regenerative Ag., Food Tech
News/Updates => used for all real news e.g. launch or major updates to initiatives, partnerships, etc ...
  • Events/Activities => for events (may also be in news) => so that we can have an /events/ page run off this ...
  • Areas of Interest (e.g. Systems, Governence, Spirituality & Religion)
    • Topics as subcategories (e.g. Collective Wisdom)
