Images should be served via separate host for better front-end performance.

tricky topic indeed. in our application we actually do this .. but we use a custom twig macro to generate the urls in the templates. right now afaik core doesn't support subdomains in the route URL generation .. but IIRC there is a PR

Custom Twig function is fine for me and gives great flexibility, we can close this.
