I'd like to have a Gentoo template but I'm a bit lost on which are the requirements to produce it.

You can either just do edit inline on the fly, or you can copy the yaml file to a different name.

To create a Gentoo template, you would need to find a "cloud" image that supports cloud-init

Maybe the "OpenStack" images would work ? From experimental

This might be a problem, for running nerdctl: gentoo.py[ERROR]: Cloud-init does not support systemd with gentoo

Tried running https://distfiles.gentoo.org/experimental/amd64/openstack/gentoo-openstack-amd64-systemd-latest.qcow2

Running without systemd (default) boots the image, but then containerd is not available (same situation as for alpine)

ERRO[0042] [failed to satisfy the optional requirement 1 of 2 "systemd must be available": systemd is required to run containerd, but does not seem to be available.

containerd normally doesn't require systemd... alpine and gentoo use openrc, so I can go the hard way and try to see what alpine-lima does...

This is the containerd-rootless-setuptool.sh that requires systemd, you can probably install the root daemon (like for alpine)

There is a whole "why?" question that I did not ask, but I suppose if we can run a FreeBSD image we can run a Gentoo image.

It downloads 1 GiB of installation (openstack image + portage tree), and then there another 1 GiB of updates (+ build time)

Note that there is some bug with the default openstack image, so that everything emerge crashes with None profile.

!!! /etc/portage/make.profile is not a symlink and will probably prevent most merges.
!!! It should point into a profile within /var/db/repos/gentoo/profiles/

The sshfs isn't strictly necessary (just the default), it could use 9p for the mounts.

I just skipped the mounts in the sample setup, that is another alternative of course.

The nerdctl package seems to be out-of-date, unfortunately.

Looks like you found a bug (invalid profiles shouldn't crash portage).

that is potentially a bug in diskimage-builder, I made a little progress on making it work for aarch64, now I have an image that boots in qemu, brings up ssh but apparently something does not work with the population of the users since lima keeps failing to enter via ssh. I manually confirmed ssh listens on the local port.

There should be support for gentoo in the cloud-init scripts, for creating the user and adding the ssh key.

As a workaround, you can do the same thing manually. Add ~/.lima/_config/user.pub to ~/.ssh/authorized_keys
