When logging into my LM17/Qiana/64bit system via mdm, my $HOME/.profile does not get executed.

I'm using .profile to set environment variables which should always be set, and after logging in via mdm, they are unset -- i.e., I suspect that .profile does not get exectued upon login via mdm.

According to http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=104250 is seems that MDM does not read ~/.profile since Linux Mint 13. Instead, ~/.pam_environment is used for storing user's environment variables.

You can find more on the subject of setting environment variables in http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/88201/whats-the-best-distro-shell-agnostic-way-to-set-environment-variables
