This is an issue with the systray applet, and happens with other java programs:
confirmed with JDownloader2: linuxmint/cinnamon#10830 (comment)

is it specific to Java apps using gtk.statusicon?

Not sure if it's all Java apps (I don't know the library/toolkit situation for Java) but this issue is not specific to Cinnamon and has been around a while:

martinpl/tray-icons-reloaded#20

There are numerous other reports of other issues, similar and not.

Could be an issue between Java and Gtk by the look of things.. if it's going through socket/plug and using xembed there's nothing we can do at DE/Xapp level.

Java devs might need to use a different tray API. I don't know what's available to them though. If they can tap into GI, then xapp.statusicon should work better.

It used to 'sort of' work in 5.2 in Cinnamon (the icon was in the right place, but with the same background, but due to changes in muffin these icons are handled differently now.
