Does anyone really needs it there since you should most likely get it via bower?

You could let the choice. No more work for you. Some people do not use Bower for many reasons. It's a "pain" to handle both Bower and NPM in a project, for the same purpose...

I just hate the fact that you have to maintain the version in the package.json as far as I remember.. right?

I'm guessing Bootstrap could be a dependency right?!
