isNaN(val); // will do Number(val) first
isNaN(); // true
isNaN('?') // true

Number.isNaN(val); // mora reliable
Number.isNaN(); //false

typeof NaN === 'number' // true

so

function isNumber(val) {
  return !Number.isNaN(val) && typeof val === 'number'
}
