Performance issues?

We are attempting to use this plugin in a fairly high-volume environment. We are running into several issues where the logstash input pipeline would get bogged down resulting in a very long lag to our outputs (remote syslog and HTTPS endpoints using logstash-output-librato). Sometimes, logs would get lost permanently. In this state, we were not able to observe any backpressure from Logstash's own logging or reporting (no JVM pressure, etc). We have not observed these issues using other input plugins during our testing.

Has anyone else experienced this issue? Does anyone have any ideas on how to make the plugin's performance better? There is an opportunity for a bounty/contract to help improve this plugin if anyone is interested.
