Hey everyone, I've been thinking about how we can improve our forum's usability, especially when it comes to organizing discussions. I was inspired by the structure on https://laravel.io/forum?filter=recent, where they use tags to filter categories in the dropdown menu. Here's my suggestion:

I definitely agree with #2. I had not gotten so far with this as deciding what goes in a sidebar to implement that, yet. But I think #1 here depends on what we decide important to show. My initial inspiration for this layout came from the Flarum forum software, which has a list of categories in the sidebar. To me, this theoretically requires fewer clicks than the laravel.io method, though laravel.io's does have the search functionality built in to make it simpler to find the category you want. I almost think you could combine those into a sidebar, though I'm afraid the category filtering would be confused as a site-wide search. Though, the site-wide search could list matching categories first, then matching posts/members. |
