AuctionSniper

The Auction Sniper from Growing Object Oriented Software, Guided by Tests but for iOS

Current Status:

Passing the first test. (Chapter 11)

Set Up Fake Auction Server

This is a bit of a chore to set up. Here is what you will need to do:

Install openfire

Create the following accounts:

  • sniper/sniper
  • auction-item-54321/auction
  • auction-item-65432/auction

In the administration console, set the host to "localhost" Set the Resource Policy to "never kick"

Openfire installs a preference item which lets you start/stop it. It runs in 32 bit mode so you have to restart System Preferences each time you access it.
That's awesome.

Building

Make sure you're on the latest version of XCode (4.6.1). Also, check that you have the latest command line tools - go to Preferences -> Downloads.

Then run "bundle install"

Run the command "frank build" to compile the app, and make a "frankified" version of it, and install the build on the simulator. Basically, this adds instrumentation to the app that frank uses to "drive" the app on the simulator.

You might have to run some other commands, but I think that they have already been run and committed to the project. see frank for details.

To test, cd to the Frank directory (you will see ./features), and run cucumber.

Things I'm not happy about: XMPPFramework produces about 200 warnings between itself and its dependencies. libstrophe would be simpler, but I got stuck trying to cross-compile it for iOS with an error about openssl/ssl.h present but could not be compiled. I may try and re-write the implementation with strophe if I can figure out how to get past that.

I had several stupid errors in the cucumber steps that caused me an hour or two of frustration (sending the "lost" message to the auction instead of the sniper)
