Hi Metabasers:
I have been adding XSL templates for displaying the new EML 2.2 fields in HTML. For taxonomy, people asked that the taxon ID info be linked out, with URLs.

So I needed a list of taxon ID providers to build URLs for. As a strawman list of taxon id providers, I went to two places: taxize (list from Jonn Porter) and your table EMLtaxonomicProviders

below is a spreadsheet The first three columns are for your DB (although I have edited your providerURL to providerID, the rest are comments.
More comments to follow - remember this is just a strawman list, and will need some discussion.

Here is the original EML issue -- to remind people of the discussion that went into choosing these fields.

Guidelines I used for including a provider on this list -- ie, providers that are not crossed out in the spreadsheet (examples of dropped candidates in parens below). Of course, these guidelines are also open to discussion:

  1. Taxon has an ID (Cal Academy fish catalog does not display taxon ids)
  2. the provider is primarily for taxa (Barcode-of-life-seems to be a specimen system)
  3. provider is not just a service for searching other DBs or data (GNR, GNI, NatureServe, GBIF)
  4. IDs are not just for internal use, that there is some suggestion of reliability, or at least no obvious unreliability. (GBIF - IDs indexed by GNR in 2009 do not resolve today)
  5. provider appears to have curation by professionals (wikispecies seems to be crowd sourced, but might be moderated)
  6. provider has a single URL head for any taxon level (algaebase has different services for different levels)

If you have other candidates, I think it's ok to list them here (@gastil, @atn38 may want to confirm.

Please include

  • Provider label
  • Provider URI (a URL in its simplest form)
  • the URL head to display a landing page for a taxon
  • example of the taxon landing page in use.

Metabase will use only the first 2 (provider label and URI). Stylesheets would need the URL head also.
