I'm not entirely sure how to license an open source game.

This is what I want:

  • Code, how I write it, etc should basically be MIT
    • I like to learn from code other people wrote, and want the same for others.
  • The game itself:
    • Not able to be distributed for money

Like you can see here : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_open-source_video_games there is two different things : engine (code) and content.

So the license code, can be MIT if you like but I prefer GPL license because it's better for the user than the developer. (Yes I'm developer and I prefer GPL than MIT).

And for the content a creative commons license is good, some documentation here: https://creativecommons.org/
For choosing between different creative commons licenses you can use this form : https://creativecommons.org/choose/
