Creating a separate issue for conda. I am having serious trouble creating a conda installable package -- probably because I do all of the symbol resolution + relative paths myself.

I can create the package but installing/linking from it seems non-trivial. On the plus side, the extension shared library filenames are probably more compatible with distutils/setuptoools generated files. See e0f947a
