A literary critic wrote that he had seen evidence that the King hired Malthus specifically to help put down the revolutionary spirit. Because the monarchy was realizing that they were in danger, because people were impoverished, diseased and hating to be killed in pointless wars. So he had Malthus say, "It's good to suffer!
