The open question

  • How should the intricate elements of social relationship be modeled among settlers ?

Describe the rationale

  • While social relationship is elusive and is more of an art than science, one may be able to quantify certain essential elements and model them in mars-sim.
  • How settlers relate with one another and view authorities will be indicative the socio-political order that will emerge in a settlement.

Describe the goal(s) you have in mind

  • Model personal relationship in such a way that it would lead to more group activities (both leisure and work-related).
  • Model how couples start families and have descendants.
  • Allow genetic aspects and traits to be passed onto descendants.
  • Add new buildings (such as nurseries, schools, etc.) for generational, long-term settlement needs.

Describe the non-goal(s) associated with the goal(s)

  • It's not a goal to fully explore how to model group relationship in such a way that would lead to political factions. It will have to be another discussion.

Specifications

  • pre 3.7.0 build 8920

I think this should be treated as an epic, because it spans a very wide field of topics, that are each in itself very complex, especially in an environment like Mars.

Can you maybe make a set of derived user stories like:

  1. Couple relationships and work activities
  2. Couple relationships and leisure activities
  3. Model the genotype of a Mars Settler
  4. Implement basic child care activities
  5. Implement a nursery type building
  6. Implement a kindergarten type building
  7. Implement a school type building
  8. Extend school building to cover adult training or certification
  9. Extend medical model to include genetic defects and cancer
  10. Implement social groups and group formation/disbanding

If you can specify some solid acceptance criteria already, that would be great since this could then be almost ready for development.

Yay. Human relationship is very organic and complicated subject. It is multi-dimensional and have many moving parts. Sometimes you can put words into describing what happens someone is angry at another person but at the same time not wanting to severe the tie, etc.

It would be interesting to model some social structures in mars-sim, beyond just a relationship score between two persons.

The concept of a social structure is that it provides a group identity to those who seeks after it. To me, it offers new dynamics and is worth exploring in mars-sim.

Say, some may find a sense of belonging in being a steering member of a not-for-profit organization.

Some would find empowerment in the pursuit of knowledge and join academic institutions or consortia and serve as spokespersons or subject matter experts.

Some would find solace in organizing political factions that represent their values and what they are willing to fight for in a society.

So, it maybe breaks down to motivation theory at a point, "how does a thing motivate humans?"

And of course, every human is unique, but some things are common schemes, like the need to have a stable social environment around them. Things just differ in the understanding, which social groups are regarded as stable and to the advantage of the settler. Just joining a stable group does not automatically make a human happy.

But also, founding a family on Earth is already more than just the social relations and on Mars, it is even more depending on adapting to the new environment. That is why I said to split things up. Maybe we can make the whole social context generic enough, that it can be easily extended and treat reproduction or children growing up in other epics. Children also have a completely different working brain than adults, since it still is under development until the age of 21, which would require some different simulated psychology, if you don't want small stupid adults.

Everyone was young and stupid once. Some last longer :D

like the need to have a stable social environment around them.

Good point, especially for children.

Things just differ in the understanding, which social groups are regarded as stable and to the advantage of the settler.

So we can track a stability score.

Some may prefer to be loner by personality and they stability factor would be low.

Joining a political faction or academic institute, attending social functions and group activities, contributing to a online forum (ideological, political, religious, etc.), conversing with others, etc. would increase the stability score.

Having a high stability factor should have some advantage of being less prone to having mental breakdown, etc. But those research merely aren't hard science.

In overall, eveyone's makeup is different. No two persons are the same.

Just joining a stable group does not automatically make a human happy.

True. it also begs the meaning of happiness.

So true. The older we get, the more likely we turn into creatures of old habit and old comfort. We become fearful to learn new things.

@bevans2000

Group activity in the form of teamwork and group dynamic is a very interesting topic.

I see we could have a team of 3 or 4 people always like to stick together to perform a mission. They know they can depend on one another.

How would you simulate and model the affinity of a team of people wanting to get together for work or for leisure ?

@bevans2000

Now that we have the concept of Group Activities, can we expand the social relationship to a group (namely, among 3 or more people) ?

Indeed yes. The Person triggered Activity group already modified relationships. For example, when there is a birthday party the initiator improves their opinion of anyone who attends
