Mate system monitor applet often shows erroneous 100% up/down network activity #57

Hi, I'm using mate-applets 1.6.1-6 on Arch from the official Mate repo for Arch. I always use the system monitor applet with just the network monitor enabled. I frequently see this when the computer is idle with no network activity:

Obviously, it's wrong. When I use the network, it actually shows a break in the activity, and then when there is no throughput it again shows 4GB/s up/down. Even if I log out and log back into Mate it still acts the same way until I reboot. I only use the wlp2s0 interface with the iwlwifi driver on a Centrino laptop, and I don't have any local network sharing/browsing enabled on this system. I confirmed with vnstat that the system is correctly detecting and reporting network activity.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

The applet takes the network stats from the interface and displays them. It very well may be that the the kernel is reporting these stats incorrectly. Have a look at the net device it's stats from the command line with ifconfig, iptraf or some other command line tool that shows the traffic.

Hi, thanks for taking a look at this. I did confirm with vnstat that the kernel is correctly detecting and reporting traffic.

I am having the same issue on my Celeron laptop only. I am using the iwlwifi driver on this particular laptop too. May be the driver?

Edit: My ethernet adapter seems to show a constantly increasing unrealistic value when in hardinfo:

Probably Ethernet related? My Ethernet adapter uses the atl1c driver.
