Executing the script with Pandoc 2.0 or later gives the following error:

RuntimeError: Pandoc died with exitcode "2" during conversion: b'--latex-engine has been removed. Use --pdf-engine instead

Since Pandox 2.0

--latex-engine

was renamed to

--pdf-latex

see https://pandoc.org/releases.html#api-changes-1 under pandoc 2.0 Behaviour changes
