This was a user feedback, but more details would help here.

E.g. I've activated the textool plugin which provides this for patches.

Is something like that sufficient, and yes, how would it translate to brushes?

A manual on how to use textool would be handy? Any links for that?

Funny that you ask, because I think it's the only plug-in which actually has one :) , see plugins/textool/Doc/.

It currently only works for patches, however.

  • create a e.g. cylinder and apply a texture
  • make sure cylinder is selected
  • go to Plugins/textool/Gi

There's no a 2D view of the texture and vertices/control points. Move some control points and observer the 3D view. Note: it may happen you move vertices on the back of the cylinder, be sure to try all for a start. See my example screenshot @ http://my-serve.rs/tmp/textool_in_action.jpg .
