This tracks the offset, using the filenames to just reopen the appropriate file when it is unpickled.
And test in VDIF.

@theXYZT - would be really handy if you could check whether this works! And perhaps review too? Code-wise, I dislike how much I have repeated getstate/setstate...
This certainly is a good reason for 4.0...
