I couldn't Software Serial get to work on a Arduino Mega. And it won't work (probably) on a Arduino Leonardo. The reason is: pin 2 isn't applicable for receiving data on theses boards. Documented here:

Hello Frank,
yes there is an issue with that on the Mega and the Leonardo.
For the Leonardo I added a sketch recently which shows the usage with Serial1.
