SINGLE BOARD COMPUTING

The Pine64 team announced that they have raised over $1.7m in pre-orders for their $15 SBC. It's definitely nice to see more competition in the SBC space, and I look forward to playing with one. Orders currently should be shipping May 2016.

The BeagleBone foundation have also announced the BeagleBone Blue, a new board designed specifically for controlling robotics. More details to be announced in February and production is planned for May.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Google's DeepMind project reached a new milestone this week, by beating champion Fan Hui at the east asian board game Go. I'd never heard of the game before, but apparently it's much more complex than chess. Out of the five games played, DeepMind's AlphaGo program won every single one.

ENCRYPTION

Mike MacCana wrote a nice runthrough of the different reasons why HTTPS encryption is important. It's well worth a read. Maybe it's time to get an SSL certificate on the NODE site.

WEARABLES

Researchers at UC Berkley are exploring the different ways wearable sensors can check for signs of disease through human sweat. The noninvasive, flexible sensors could enable doctors to monitor the health of patients in real time, and personalize treatments for maximum effectiveness.

WIFI CARD HACK

Hackers at the Warsaw Hackerspace have released an in-depth writeup on how to install OpenWrt on the cheap and tiny Zsun Wifi Card Readers. This opens up lots of potentially awesome projects from simple file servers, to wifi access points and repeaters, pirateboxes and TOR hidden services.

BITCOIN

This week, the Bitcoin network reached 1 quintillion hashes per second. That's a 1 with 18 zeroes after it. This computing power is used by the miners to secure the network and to find new coins, and it just shows how massive the Bitcoin network has grown in only a few years.

DRONES

The Drone Racing League just uploaded a bunch of new videos to their youtube channel in advance of their first event which will be held in Miami on Feb 22. I think this looks amazing, hopefully it's the start of something great.

VIDEOS

Two awesome DIY videos this week. The first is from The Hacksmiths Youtube Channel, and it shows his custom built Exo Skeleton lifting a Mini Cooper. The full 12 part howto is on there as well.

The next video by Paul Yan, shows how to create a $40 virtual reality bike that reacts to your movements using an arduino and simple sensor.

THIS WEEK ON NODE

This week I showed you how to make a simple Micro SD card holder using some cheap PCB components, and I also made a video exploring a few ideas about what a world with self-driving vehicles could look like.

More coming next week, thanks for watching.
