Microsoft PowerToys version

0.73.0

Installation method

GitHub, PowerToys auto-update

Running as admin

Yes

Area(s) with issue?

FancyZones, FancyZones Editor

Steps to reproduce

Some applications do not use the exact zone sizing on application restart. When I restart any of the affected apps, they open slightly offset from their assigned zone. See attached images showing the zone size and the window size/position. Using the hotkeys, the apps will snap into their correct zones and sizes. I use 2 zones that overlap, ~60% for right and ~60% for left. Outlook, Edge, OneNote are the apps which I use most regularly that are affected. The difference is small, but it's consistent, affecting multiple PC's with different video cards and monitors of different resolutions and aspect ratios. Teams and Outlook preview edition are amongst the apps not affected.

Outlook on my monitor is assigned to the left ~60% of my screen. When it opens, there is space along the left and bottom edge of the zone, and it overshoots the right edge of the zone by a similar amount. The top of the zone is perfect. The other apps are on the right ~60% and extend beyond the zone on the left and have a gap at the bottom and right. I have tried reinstalling PowerToys and Office, but no effect. I've made small adjustments to the zone sizes, but again no effect. This bug has existed for multiple releases (I don't recall when it started, but it was this year I believe).

It's a minor issue, but it's consistent and slightly annoying.

✔️ Expected Behavior

Restarting these applications will correctly place them in their appropriate zones.

❌ Actual Behavior

Applications do not stay within the constraints of the assigned zone

FWIW, I'm happy to test any beta solutions if it is at all helpful. Don't feel the need to include me, just a friendly offer.

Hi @syserss, would you mind checking if it's reproducible on 0.74?

Unfortunately, it's the same behavior. I rebooted after installing the update. Windows 11 fully patched.

Is it possible to reopen this, sorry I hadn't checked on the progress.

Thank you for sending the report. You mentioned that the issue appears when you reopen the app. I've noticed that the Move newly created windows to their last known zone option is not enabled, so the app is not moved to the zone by FancyZones upon reopening. Please confirm if enabling this option resolves the issue.

Enabling that checkbox was a 90% fix after a reboot at least for one machine (haven't gotten home to confirm on the other, but I'll assume until proven otherwise).

The only remaining bug (which I can't test at home), is that at work my 2nd screen is my laptop. For that screen, when moving a window to it, it fills up about 99% of the zone (which is the full screen). Maximizing the window fills the screen/zone. This survived a reboot, but it's such a minor issue I feel it's not worth keeping this bug open from my perspective anyway. I'll let you decide if the issue should remain open.
