Instead of repeatedly hitting ctrl-win-arrow to find a particular desktop, I would like to be able to map a shortcut key that goes directly to a particular desktop. For example, ctrl-1, ctrl-2, ctrl-3 etc ... When using up to 9 virtual desktops this saves considerable time wandering through screens.
Scenario when this would be used?
My workflow on Mac and Linux for the last decade or two has been to have virtual desktops set up as follows:
1 - email
2 - browsers
3 - code editor
4 - terminals
5 - source control
6 - chat/social
7-9 misc database, ftp etc.
I remap the caps lock key to control, and I map series of hotkeys : ctrl-1 goes to desktop 1(email), ctrl-2 goes to desktop 2(browsers) etc. My attention span when working on code can be limited, and the time it takes to tab-tab-tab-tab-oops-shift-tab is super annoying. a direct keystroke to get there is much more efficient.
Furthermore, moving a window to a new desktop in os x is as simple as clicking to drag the window, and then hit that hotkey ... and the desktop changes underneath while still holding onto the window!
This is the one killer feature that prevents me from seriously consider using Windows for software development... It's just too much of a cognitive tripwire for me.
