Describe the bug

  • OS and Version: Windows 10
  • VS Code Version: 4.54.3
  • C/C++ Extension Version: 1.3.0-insiders
  • Other extensions you installed (and if the issue persists after disabling them):
  • Does this issue involve using SSH remote to run the extension on a remote machine?: No.

A project with working IntelliSense using C/C++ version 1.2.2 breaks when upgrading to the latest insiders (1.3.0)

Steps to reproduce

Use the latest insiders release with an Unreal project,

This is because it stopped processing the preincludes of the response file the compile command uses.

Note that prior to 1.3.0-insiders, there were scenarios in which -include args were being silently ignored. One such scenario occurred when the specified file(s) did not yet exist. Since the paths used in the -include args are under Intermediate\Build, is it possible these paths did not exist when you launched VS Code? If you reload VS Code after these folders/files were created, do the errors go away?

Yeah something weird is going on. I reset my project and it went back to the correct name and Insiders is still bugged. I'll delete my previous comment.

I believe the root cause of this issue is use of -include args, with the compiler set to cl.exe. With 1.3.0-insiders, changes were made to more accurately check compiler args. -include is not an arg supported by cl.exe. Instead, /FI or -FI should be used.

cl : Command line warning D9002 : ignoring unknown option '-include'

If you change these args to use /FI or -FI, does that address the issue?

We could restore the behavior of accepting args not supported by the compiler, for the sake of backwards compatibility. But, I'm not sure that would be ideal, as it would lead to continuing to hide issues like this one.

Yep using -FI fixes it.

It might take awhile for Epic to fix this.

I could also update my extension to fix it but not everyone would have it or want to run it.

I have a work-around for our next insiders that will continue to accept the -include arg when passed to cl.exe. When this is addressed by Epic and the fix is widely available, we may remove the work-around.

there is a commit using /FL instead of -include in UE4 upstream that just landed in 4.26 branch @Colengms @boocs @sean-mcmanus
