Does this issue occur when all extensions are disabled?: Yes

  • VS Code Version: 1.73.1 (Universal)
  • OS Version: 13.0.1 (22A400)

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. I was using macOS, By fault, I disabled the GitHub authentication extension in vs code so now I can't even access my workspace in vs code. In GitHub Pull Requests and Issues extension this line is showing "This extension has been disabled because it depends on an extension that is disabled." I'm trying to sign in to GitHub Codespaces in vs code but nothing's working. Now there's no option either to sign in with GitHub in vs code?

I tried everything I could but none of them were working, I just wanted to access cs50's Codespaces but it isn't working, I've done many things with cs50's Codespaces but now it isn't working.

  1. Now I can't even sign in to GitHub with vscode
    3.No error is showing either
  2. Sign in to GitHub option is gone too

@ritamgit-alt what have you tried so far to get this working again?

Just to rule it out, did you try re-enabling the GitHub Authentication extension? That's an absolute must.

Thanks for reporting this issue! Unfortunately, it's hard for us to understand what issue you're seeing. Please help us out by providing a screen recording showing exactly what isn't working as expected. While we can work with most standard formats, .gif files are preferred as they are displayed inline on GitHub. You may find https://gifcap.dev helpful as a browser-based gif recording tool.

If the issue depends on keyboard input, you can help us by enabling screencast mode for the recording (Developer: Toggle Screencast Mode in the command palette). Lastly, please attach this file via the GitHub web interface as emailed responses will strip files out from the issue.

Happy coding!

And also can you provide the contents of the GitHub Authentication output pane:

And also anything that shows up in Dev Tools:

  • ctrl + shift + P
  • "Dev Tools"

Sorry for the delay. I was on vacation. Couple things:

  1. That "update service" notification is interesting. How did you install VS Code?
  2. If you run the Show running extensions command in the command palette (cmd+shift+p) do you see GitHub Authentication on that list?

No worries, it's working perfectly right now. I totally cleared my vs code from the user database. So now it's totally fine.

This issue happened to me on Windows VS Code. The issue was a confusing one:

  • I was trying to use the settings sync in VS Code by signing in through my GitHub account.
    • Since my default browser has my organization's SSO GitHub account it tried to use that, but I wanted to use my personal account.
  • Because I thought there might be a different way to sign in that wasn't through the browser I disabled the built-in GitHub Authentication extension (found the built-in extension through the VS Code popup message gear button since it detected a failed login attempt).
  • Then I discovered "Sign in with GitHub" no longer appeared as an option because I disabled the extension, so I searched for the extension to enable it again in the extensions tab, which apparently does not show the built-in ones unless you filter it.
  • I found what I thought might be it, but it was very deceptive... this is the issue the author of the post ran into I believe: there is a public extension with the name "GitHub Authentication" which is the same name and icon as the built-in extension (very confusing) but by a different company CloudStudio.
  • Here I found that you could use Extensions: Show built-in extensions to show built-in extensions and finally located the right extension to enable.
  • Then I changed my default browser to one where I wasn't signed in to complete the sign-in process.

I believe the CloudStudio extension should be renamed to reduce confusion.

@DTayloe the CloudStudio extension should no longer show up on the marketplace. We attempted to contact them, but they didn't respond in a certain window so we had no choice but to unlist it for now. Hopefully this removes that confusion.
