Possibly a duplicate of #61390
On closing VSCode, an automatic update was triggered. Part way through the update, a dialog popped up claiming it could not delete a file because it was still in use and that I should close VSCode if it was still open or see if a virus scanner was accessing the file. VSCode was closed and no virus scan was happening at the time so I told it to try again. It failed again with the same error so I cancelled the update and tried to relaunch VSCode. At this time, Windows gives me an error that the target of my shortcut no longer exists. Following where the shortcut should have been pointing, I found the same mostly deleted file structure mentioned in #61390.

  • VSCode Version: Unknown, version check not possible once application deleted itself.
  • OS Version: Windows 10, version 1803, build 17134.345

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Close VSCode with an update pending.

Does this issue occur when all extensions are disabled?: Unknown. Application deleted itself preventing further testing. The following extensions were installed before self-deletion:

ascii-unicode-excape (0.1.0)
C/C++ (0.19.0)
hexdump for VSCode (1.7.0)
highlight-words (0.0.8)
Material Icon Theme (3.6.0)
Partial Diff (1.4.0)
Perforce for VS Code (3.1.0)
Python (2018.9.2)
Shell launcher (0.2.0)
Unicode code point of current character (0.1.1)

Update log is attached.
vscode-inno-updater-1540913125.log

Workaround:
In searching my temp directory for the update logs, I found the following file "%TMP%\vscode-update-user-x64\CodeSetup-stable-7f3ce96ff4729c91352ae6def877e59c561f4850.exe". Running this exe directly seems to have reinstalled vscode and preserved my user settings.
