Unclear how I ended up in this state (VSCode had been open for a day or two), but closing exiting and re-opening VSCode hasn't resolved the issue: Each time I try to open a new terminal it quickly closes. It flashes a message stating "An install, uninstall, or upgrade is in progress for this distribution."

I noticed there was an update available which I installed, but nothing has changed.

In the dev tools, the console displays a different error message:

Thanks for submitting this issue. Please also check if it is already covered by an existing one, like:

• Editor appears to be hanging loading file after re-registering FileSystemProvider (#61182)
• Start-up and switching folder(s) or files is supper slow (#55391)
• VSCode installer "open with..." fails on unprivileged accounts (#33785)

Please try these:

• Disable legacy console mode in cmd.exe/conhost's properties, or
• Try tweaking the terminal.integrated.windowsEnableConpty setting

Thanks @Tyriar its looks like this isn't actually a bug related to VSCode but WSL, which I have as my terminal.

Switching the terminal cmd to cmd.exe has the terminal working correctly.
