  • High Level: I debit my checking account to credit a negative loan account (ex. Bills:Mortgage). Any I do this with are missing from reports.
  • Example: Monthly recurring from Bank Account 1 to Mortgage Company 1. Category Bills:Mortgage, auto execute, occurs monthly. Under all reports Mortgage Company 1 shows $0, and Bills:Mortgage also shows 0$ (actually shows $100 since I tested a manual entry to see if that worked, and it did).

You will not see these in the category reports as transfer between accounts that are part of your database are not seen as either expenses or incomes - they remain within your account portfolio. You can see this balancing of the transaction in the transaction report. E.g.

Enhancement request. Allow "Where the money goes"\etc. category reports to choose not to include the credit to loan\term accounts. This will then compute the category correctly as all debits instead of being "settled even" by the transfer to loan account credit. My actual use case would depend on another "enhancement". That feature request would be having the APR on Loan Accounts being automatically applied to payments based on an amortization schedule giving an accurate outstanding loan number. Right now I have to do a monthly "reconcile" to the loan as a category of LoanName_APR. Then be able to track several loan accounts locally (and accurately) without having to use Mint or other financial aggregators. Wish list stuff. FYI I've been using MMEX for years (4+) and think its the best thing out there right now.

Can you please raise a separate feature request for this please so we can track the two requests independently.

Having considered and reviewed this I don't think we should be making any changes to accommodate this, certainly not the special handling of loan/term accounts. In honesty, I think that we would be better to remove the category for the Transfers as they serve no useful purpose as far as I can see.

When you transfer money between accounts, one account balance increases and the other account balance decreases—but your net worth remains the same.

I note that Quicken support Tags as another mechanism to further differentiate transactions and recommend this for transfers as an alternative to Category - https://www.quicken.com/support/how-do-i-categorize-transfer-quicken-windows.

The support of Tags has been mentioned before (#1477) and maybe a better way of supporting this.

I'd appreciate the input of others on this.

FYI: I use the transfers category instead of the built-in transfer in MMEX. In MMEX a transfer is one transaction. If you download transactions from your banks, you have to pick one as the transfer and delete the other. I prefer the dates in each account match with the bank statements. In the US at least transfers between institutions are about 2-3 days apart. Quicken supported this (a transfer was essentially linking two transactions as a transfer). I realize my use of the transfer category is unusual.

Apologies, when I said "In honesty, I think that we would be better to remove the category for the Transfers as they serve no useful purpose as far as I can see" I was implying that we remove the specification of the category for transaction type = TRANSFER, not the actual category.
