The scanner in the local backend could be extended to also support playlists of the types .cue, .m3u, etc.
This can then be presented via the mpd protocol by responding to the "listplaylists" command.

This resembles mopidy/mopidy#499.

Although it's slightly embarrassing to comment on this after six years, this won't be considered for Mopidy 3.0 due to resource constraints, I'm afraid.
