Fluid dynamics is essential for understanding the behavior of the atmosphere and oceans, which in turn affect the climate and weather of our planet. However, most textbooks on fluid dynamics focus either on the atmospheric or the oceanic aspects, or on the theoretical foundations of geophysical fluid dynamics (GFD). In this book, Geoffrey K. Vallis provides a comprehensive and unified treatment of both atmospheric and oceanic fluid dynamics, covering the fundamentals of GFD as well as the large-scale circulation of the atmosphere and ocean.

The book is divided into four parts. The first part introduces the basic equations of motion for fluids, including the effects of rotation and stratification, the shallow water system and isentropic coordinates, vorticity and potential vorticity, and simplified equations for ocean and atmosphere. The second part deals with instabilities, wave-mean flow interaction and turbulence, covering barotropic and baroclinic instability, basic theory of incompressible turbulence, geostrophic turbulence and baroclinic eddies, and turbulent diffusion and eddy transport. The third part focuses on the large-scale atmospheric circulation, discussing the overturning circulation (Hadley and Ferrel cells), the zonally averaged mid-latitude atmospheric circulation, and planetary waves and the stratosphere. The fourth part examines the large-scale oceanic circulation, describing wind-driven gyres, the buoyancy-driven ocean circulation, and the wind- and buoyancy-driven ocean circulation.

The book is intended for graduate students and researchers in GFD, meteorology, atmospheric science and oceanography. It includes end-of-chapter review questions to aid understanding, as well as additional resources available online at www.cambridge.org/9780521849692. The book is well-written and organized, with clear explanations and illustrations. It covers many modern topics and provides up-to-date knowledge on atmospheric and oceanic fluid dynamics. It is a valuable reference for anyone interested in learning more about the fundamentals and large-scale circulation of fluids in our environment.

The book also covers some advanced topics that are not usually found in other textbooks on fluid dynamics, such as the theory of potential enstrophy and entropy, the thermodynamics of moist air, the quasi-geostrophic theory of the troposphere and stratosphere, the theory of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, and the theory of the meridional overturning circulation. These topics are presented in a concise and accessible way, with references to more detailed sources for further reading.

The book is based on the author's extensive experience in teaching and research in atmospheric and oceanic fluid dynamics. He has also written another book on GFD, entitled Essentials of Atmospheric and Oceanic Dynamics, which is a shorter and more elementary version of this book. Both books are suitable for courses on GFD, as well as for self-study by students and researchers who want to learn more about the physics of fluids in our environment.
