set_field_buffer: this is a very cranky method. If I try stuffing it with the output of system it often prints nothing. My findings are: you need to chomp! the string before printing.
xx = %x[echo $LOGNAME]
e.g. set_field_buffer(0, xx.chomp!)
If you have a multiline field, it will only show the value if you input one line. It rejects anythong longer. So putting the output of a file won't work. I read in a file into a var and tried setting it. Does not work.
It shows the result of ls -m f*.rb, but not ls -m *.rb. (ls -m concats output into one line and delimts with a comma).
Okay, for longer results you have to remove newlines. It will not accept them.
---
field_status: once a field is modified, it remains true when exiting each time. For fields that have been set with a default value, it remains true from start. Perhaps I should set it to false in such cases. Or else I should set it to false after validating or whatever.
-- Done the above.
help_text is printed as-is.
help_text_eval is evaluated to determine values such as ranges, keys of hashes in memory at runtime etc.
