With GitHub, the process itself is already pretty much perfect. :) I think the most important thing for doing open source better is putting continuous conscious effort into making your software as simple as possible (in source code, documentation, examples, etc.). It lowers the barrier for others to contribute, makes adoption faster, makes it easier to maintain and improve the project, etc.
