CPack can create a functional package but it is far from what is required for an official distribution. I have been asked to 'fix up' the cpack output to get it closer. However, even something as simple as using the appropriate architecture lib directory i.e., lib64 (RPM) lib/x86_64-linux-gnu (DEB) breaks the TGZ distribution.

I spent a decent amount of time tweaking the cmake files only to come up with a more complex solution that isn't any better. Evaluating what we need for TravisCI and our production deploy cpack should suffice. So we either accept it as-is, or abandoned cpack for everything but the TGZ. If we ever need an official package I would recommend using the TGZ as a base and reworking that into what is needed outside of cmake/cpack.
