This makes sense to me! I remember reading about AsciiDoc and thinking it was a neat idea but trying too hard to reinvent the wheel, while Markdown makes honest compromises and builds on the way people naturally like to write. I also don't like that AsciiDoc uses a Byte Order Mark (BOM) which is discouraged by the Unicode Consortium.

Yes I agree! markdown is way better and is constantly being maintained. It's also used in almost every platform I use. This was definitely a great move!
