About Java Desktop App IMO, only Java desktop apps will survive in existed development tools especially Eclipse and JetBrains Since, Oracle stopped to release binaries for free/community edition, there is no official supported binaries as independent components (contrast with Python or NodeJs)
Web(Browser) Technology had advanced, in desktop (Windows/Mac), web-based is much more common, since technically desktops have never been universally accepted by users automatic update through preliminary centralized distribution store (App store). There is no way to force to update apps in their platform except those professional tools (Professional CAD, or large enterprise apps)
