I saw you mentioning this feature in the Goals section so I thought I'd leave the link, just in case you haven't come across this project yet: https://www.npmjs.org/package/smartcrop

Since ribs already uses OpenCV, porting thumbors detection algorithms is probably the better option: https://github.com/thumbor/thumbor/wiki/Detection-algorithms
