What

Alistair Duggin and @mcheung-nhs presented the work-in-progress NHS.UK accessibility checklist yesterday. We need to follow up with them (possibly Leigh Mortimer and Sarah Norman too) about how they plan to implement, test and iterate this new accessibility checklist within NHS.UK and how it may impact the current accessibility guidance in the NHS digital service manual.

It would be good to find out if there is a clear plan of action for the checklist, for example:

  • a period set out to test the new checklist
  • analysis of testing results
  • how the checklist might be made more accessible (currently uses Notion which has some accessibility concerns)
  • how we update the existing accessibility guidance on the basis of their findings or replace it with something better that meets the criteria for acceptance in the SM (including being unique, useful, well tested, iterated and meeting development standards)

Why

We don't want teams across NHS.UK or the wider health and care sector to be confused about where to find the "right" guidance or tools to measure how well their services and products are meeting accessibility regulations and recommendations.

Assigned to @georginaplatt and @EllenDoyle for now. It may require broader UCD involvement from the team after initial discussions though.

Is the NHS.UK accessibility checklist available publicly?

Not yet. It's being tested internally but we're talking with the team about how we might make it available publicly - if it tests well.
