Would it be overkill to add a test that requiring freelist prints a deprecation warning? Or even just a test to show that require('freelist') doesn't blow up? I don't think we have any test code that exercises lib/freelist.js at all.

@Trott The deprecation functions are properly tested. So, requiring freelist and verifying the message may not be necessary, I guess.

EDIT: Apart from that, _http_common.js requires the internal/freelist and it didn't break in the CI run.

Something as simple as assert.equal(require('freelist'), require('internal/freelist')) may be sufficient.

@targos But we are working on deprecating the module altogether and the module has nothing in it. Is it absolutely necessary to add a test here? I can add the tests suggested if you and @Trott feel so.

Deprecated functions still need to work, so I'm for a test.

As it stands now, if you change lib/freelist.js to a file with nothing but 'use strict'; in it and rebuild iojs, all tests pass, but now require('freelist') returns an empty object.

So, yeah, the assertion @targos suggests would be good. I was thinking something more like this:

var freelist = require('freelist');

assert(typeof freelist === 'object');
assert(typeof freelist.FreeList === 'function');

The simple @targos assertion will work, the code above will work, a combination of both will work, but really, there ought to be something (in my opinion, at least).

@thefourtheye Even if we are deprecating it, it can still be required by users, so IMO we should make sure that we don't break it in the future.
Then when the deprecation process is over and the feature finally removed we can delete the test with it.

Nit: I wouldn't call the file test-freelist-deprecation.js since it's not testing the deprecation. Just test-freelist.js. (But this is a nit and probably shouldn't hold up a merge.)

@Trott Actually we are just testing if the module is properly deprecated, not the functionality, right? If we name it test-freelist it might give an impression that we are actually testing the module's functionality.

The test doesn't test that it's deprecated. You can take out your deprecation in the code, and the test will still pass. It's just a minimal test for freelist. Having it just means that if someone goes in and messes with the deprecation code at a later date and really severely breaks things, we might actually catch it.

As per the dicussion in nodejs#569, this patch issues a deprecation warning when freelist modeule is required.
