My account on Telegram got banned

This seems like the best place to tell everybody that I work with on Telegram: my account just got banned.

I opened the Nostr Design group and wrote something along the lines of "Is anybody in here looking for work? https://soapbox.pub/ditto/"

Then my account immediately got banned.

I sent Telegram a support email. This is what we get for being at the whims of some faceless corporation.

The need for a great Nostr chat client is now even greater. I don't trust Signal not to ban my account either.

Was the problem that soliciting employment is against the ToS?

My phone number was previously a Google Voice number, which I transferred to T-Mobile like 5 years ago.

The running theory is that I posted in a public group, having something resembling a VOIP number, and then used the word "work" along with a link.

But I really don't know the real reason.

I could probably create a new account with another phone number. But I will lose access to the Soapbox group, because nobody else has permission to add me back or elevate me to admin.

I'm thinking the best alternative for my team is to self-host an Element/Matrix server. But then I will lose precious contacts like the ability to chat directly with fiatjaf. So I don't know. I have begged the Telegram overlords. And if they don't give it back I think I will have to just create another Telegram account.

No. I don't think it was the link. After doing a bit of research I think the Nostr Design group itself may be compromised. Posting in that is what triggered it.

I never understood why people use telegram... The app is terrible, metadata leaks are their business model and censorship resistance is zero.

I just spent a while looking through all the chat apps on nostr.net. The only one that claims to do private group chat is 0xchat, but it doesn't have any desktop app.

It seems like my best course of action is a self-hosted Matrix server. Nostr unfortunately doesn't seem ready to replace Telegram yet.
