Customizing your SCRAMBLE

To customize your SCRAMBLE keys, download VIA from https://caniusevia.com/

With your SCRAMBLE plugged into your computer, open VIA. The SCRAMBLE will be recognized. You can now program your SCRAMBLE.

Flashing Firmware

⚠️ Stop! The SCRAMBLE comes in two versions: V1 (AVR) and V2 (RP2040). If you have purchased a SCRAMBLE before January 2023, it likely a V1, and uses .hex files and is flashed using QMK Toolbox. If you have purchased a SCRAMBLE after January 2023, it is likely a V2, which uses .uf2 files and is flashed by dragging and dropping the firmware to the RPI-RP2 USB device, just like the Bit-C PRO.

The ATmega328P uses a fork of USBaspLoader as the bootloader. The bootloader is in a protected code region so there is a low risk of damaging or overwriting it. You can build firmware using the QMK Configurator, but note that it does not support changing encoder or OLED functionality (yet).

Entering bootloader mode

To enter the bootloader, start with the SCRAMBLE unplugged from USB. With the SCRAMBLE positioned so the USB connector is on the left, hold the green (lower-right) switch and plug into the PC. The LED will stay on, indicating it is in bootloader mode. If it worked, you should see a new USBAsp device in QMK Toolbox.

For SCRAMBLE V2, a new USB device called RPI-RP2 will appear.

Flashing new firmware

For SCRAMBLE V1, download and install QMK Toolbox. If on Windows, also install device drivers if prompted. SCRAMBLE V2 don't require QMK Toolbox or any additional drivers. Simply drag and drop the .uf2 file onto the RPI-RP2 USB device that appears after entering bootloader mode.

Before flashing SCRAMBLE V1, make sure that "atmega328p" is selected under the "MCU (AVR only)" menu in QMK toolbox. Select a .hex file and press the "Flash" button. After flashing, you must press the green (lower-right) switch to exit the bootloader, or unplug and replug the SCRAMBLE.
