You could set up a custom badge on your README which pulls from a JSON feed which shows how many people have starred this repo.

Obviously, you'd need to host the API somewhere to do that, but it's the first thing that came to mind.

I think you'd get more stargazers in the end.

I want to clarify your suggestion, do you mean to make something like this ?

I have an idea of making stargazers list with their avatars, sort by their number of followers. Similar to this:

There's probably several approaches to take; I like your ideas.
