I'm happy with Discord at the moment, but it's obviously the major piece of the puzzle here that's not self hosted or under the group's control. Opening issue to track info on alternatives.

Any alternative would need a similar feature set:

  • Multi channel
  • Permissions
  • Video + Voice Chat
  • Streaming
  • Bots & API
  • Phone Apps

Definitely seems like most mature option, tons of integrations including Outline
