Herokenv

Easily pull Heroku environment variables into non-Heroku environments.

Installation

Add this line to your application's Gemfile:

gem 'herokenv'

And then execute:

$ bundle install

Or install it yourself as:

$ gem install herokenv

Usage

Before or during the boot stage of your app you can require herokenv and have it populate your ENV based on the values in a Heroku app.

require 'herokenv'
herokenv = Herokenv::Client.new(oauth_token: 'xxx', app: 'stark-citadel-2145')
herokenv.populate_env_from_app

Now your local process will have access to ENV vars that are set in your heroku app.

If you want to only load some perticular ENV variables you can use only:

herokenv.populate_env_from_app only: %w[ONLY_LOAD_THIS_VAR]

Or you can load everything except ones that you want to exclude using except:

herokenv.populate_env_from_app except: %w[DO_NOT_LOAD_THIS_VAR]

Development

After checking out the repo, run bin/setup to install dependencies. Then, run rake spec to run the tests. You can also run bin/console for an interactive prompt that will allow you to experiment.

To install this gem onto your local machine, run bundle exec rake install. To release a new version, update the version number in version.rb, and then run bundle exec rake release, which will create a git tag for the version, push git commits and tags, and push the .gem file to rubygems.org.
