In the setup.py there is a version number given. I think it would be useful, especially later on, to have this version number also explicit in the README file (or somewhere else, easily accessible).

Yes. Currently this version number is somewhat preliminary since it does not reflect version tags in the repository. There is only the master branch (plus feature/issue branches), which sort of means "everything is experimental".
We need to decide on a release schedule first, and then we will have proper milestones, version tags in the repo (after the first official release) and version numbers on PyPI.
I agree with @kohr-h, this number is currently quite useless, and once we start using a proper release schedule, we may want to display it in other places, for now I dont think it is needed however.
