Manual Install

I know that this is meant for omf but in an attempt to reduce bloat I am trying to install this stuff manually. I've gotten the actual function to work but completions and syntax highlighting seem to still be using the ones for default cd.
What is the correct way to make them work manually? Currently what I am trying to do is just source the cd.fish file in completions but that's not working.
