Rya complained about the Ctrl+J shortcut for the joystick configuration menu because Ctrl is confirm. This is a problem when on the titlescreen, or standing next to an NPC. Would it be possible to bring it up the first time you press a button on the joystick? (Hint: what about the global configuration file that Mike always wanted!) He also suggested being able to assign a key such as Z, to any (not just the first 2 or whatever the OHR currently supports) of the joystick buttons from the configuration screen, since many games use keys for extra functions, such as running.

There is no reason why we can't have fully auto-configuring joystick support with no need for the calibration screen at all. That calibration screen is a throwback to the days when the DOS allmodex was reading raw joystick axis electrical resistance values directly from the gameport controller.

Windows and Linux can both handle axis calibration. What I would love to do is scrap the joystick calibrations screen, and just unconditionally use joystick input. (we don't have to worry anymore about that old problem where an uncalibrated joystick would cause random movements)

Although I still want to scrap the current joystick configuration screen, I am having second thoughts about unconditionally using joystick input. I am beginning to think that the problem of "Why is my character stuck walking up and left" would still be ubiquitous. I am not saying we need to have axis calibration (that is the operating system's job) but we do need to have a way for joystick support to be either on or off, and for the user to be aware of it.

Also, being able to configure what button does what would be great. (and yes, we will use a global config file)

I think we should look to emulators for inspiration on how to make joystick configuration not suck :)
