Currently we've hard coded how a cursor can update the application state.

My desired use-case is https://gist.github.com/asolove/8290306. The names and API are definitely wrong. The key is that a cursor is just a value with an attached way to update that value. I think there is a whole interesting set of cursors and higher-order cursor manipulation functions.
