Unencrypted HTTP connections have become rare these days. It'd push the API forward to use HTTPS, perhaps via Let's Encrypt.

Thanks for opening an issue @nschloe! Agreed this is important - once we get the funding, hence time to work on this we will surely do that.

Note: The API data is also severely outdated by now...
